Essay --
Niall Killian Killian 1 Samson 6 Leukemia Leukemia is cancer of the blood cells; it starts in the bone marrow which is the soft tissue inside most bones where blood cells are made. When you are healthy your bone marrow makes red and white blood cells. Red and white blood cells help your body fight infection and carry oxygen to all parts of your body. When you have leukemia, the bone marrow makes a unusual amount of abnormal white blood cells known as leukemia cells. Leukemia cells don't work like normal white blood cells, they grow faster and they don't stop growing when they should. Over time, the leukemia cells crowd out and outnumber the normal blood cells which can lead to serious problems such as anemia, bleeding, and infections. Leukemia cells can also spread to the lymph nodes or other organs causing serious swelling and pain. Many wonder how one acquires leukemia and is it genetic. The answer is yes and no, various connections between heredity and leukemia has been found due to the few Leukemia causing factors that are inherited. Scientists have researched to see if there is any connection with external causes, but there is no relationship between external causes and leukemia. The cause for leukemia is still unknown. An experiment was conducted in the UK in 2010 where they tested if leukemia was more common in males or females. In males, it is the 9th most common cancer and in females it was the 10th most common cancer. That year there were 8,257 new cases of leukemia in the UK, 4,816 were men and 3,441 were women. It varies for age groups as well. 62% of cases were diagnosed in men and women over the age of 65, and only 10% were diagnosed to men and women under the age of 35. The reason why Leukemia is more common i... ...p 1 and gap 2. Due to this the cell divides at a unnatural rate and causes many mutations. Cancer always starts with just one cell dividing at a rapid rate due to external or genetic factors, and while genetic factors are uncontrollable, most forms of cancer can be avoided by for example using sunscreen to avoid UV rays or choosing not to smoke. Some cancers are simply not avoidable like Leukemia, but if you keep a close eye on it, it is treatable especially if it is caught early. The symptoms of Leukemia are good indicators that your body is not healthy, so you shouldnââ¬â¢t pass off confusion, vomiting, or seizures as anything not important especially if you have a family history of cancer. Over 38,000 patients are diagnosed with leukemia each year and it can happen to anybody, so regular blood tests are highly recommended because the sooner you find out, the better.

Innocence in Catcher in the Rye Essay
In JD Salingerââ¬â¢s Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield is a boy aimlessly traveling New York City after being expelled from a classy boarding school. Holden poses a great deal of trepidation when it comes to sexual relationships, especially those of Jane and Sunny. Furthermore, Holden tends to misjudge the maturity of his fellow characters. The combination of this misconception, the tension between sexual trepidation, and an adult life with adult relationships, results in confusion for him. In Holdenââ¬â¢s life, there have only been a few people heââ¬â¢s cherished more than his childhood neighbor, Jane Gallagher. They were close childhood friends, and when his roommate Stradlater brings her up years later in high school, all he can talk about is the innocent fun they used to have: playing checkers, watching her dance ballet in the summer heat, and how her Doberman always came into his yard. However, he also reminisces on how her ââ¬Å"boozehoundâ⬠stepfather would always ââ¬Å"run around the goddam house nakedâ⬠(42). He suspects that her stepfather had harassed Jane, who ââ¬Å"had [a] terrific figure, and [he] wouldnââ¬â¢tââ¬â¢ve put it past that bastardâ⬠(103). This really bothers Holden, as does when Stradlater insinuates that he made sexual advances onto Jane on their date. To Holden, sexual encounters mean an adulteration of innocence, and he hates that Stradlater or Janeââ¬â¢s stepfather may have corrupted Jane. Many times, Holden promises himself that he ââ¬Å"outa go down and say hello to herâ⬠(40), or that he should ââ¬Å"give old Jane a buzzâ⬠(195), but he never does. Subconsciously, he fears that Jane will have grown up, and calling her or seeing her will surely alter the young, innocent, checkers-playing version of Jane that he has in his mind. This is confusing for Holden because Jane has grown up, yet he still thinks of her as a little girl, not the grown woman that she is. Holden ââ¬Å"knew that she wouldnââ¬â¢t let [Stradlater] get to first base with her, but it drove [him] crazy anywayâ⬠(104). This shows Holdenââ¬â¢s potential misconception of Janeââ¬â¢s innocence. It is unlikely for a post-teenage young woman to be as sheltered and have as much innocence as she did when she was a little girl. However, this is something Holden cannot grasp. This dilemma is a direct result of Holdenââ¬â¢s irrational respect for innocence, influenced by sexual confrontations in Holdenââ¬â¢s past. When Holden agrees to have a prostitute come to his room in the hotel, he is soon greeted by Sunny at his door. Holden is immediately unimpressed with Sunnyââ¬â¢s maturity; how she was ââ¬Å"jiggling this one foot up and downâ⬠, she ââ¬Å"never said thank youâ⬠, and she ââ¬Å"had this tiny little wheeny-whiny voiceâ⬠(123). He also notices that she appears very young, and said things that were really childish. This ends up making him feel ââ¬Å"more depressed than sexyâ⬠(123), and he decides not to have sex with her after all. The depiction of this young girl making money as a prostitute seems to upset Holden, and he ultimately concludes that having sex with her would spoil her innocence. This is where Holden is again misguided. Just as it is unlikely for Jane to retain the same degree of innocence through the years, it is improbable that Sunny, being a prostitute, will have not had sex with many people in the past, therefore preserving her innocence. But all Holden can see in Sunny is the childish and immature, which results in a conflicted view of the world. The importance of innocence to Holden is something that results in nervousness towards othersââ¬â¢ sexual identity and activity. His perspective of Jane and Sunnyââ¬â¢s innocence is also misguided to the point where he sees innocence in them when there is none. Overall, the importance of innocence to Holden results in contention that is less than innocent.

Barack Obama - Terms as President
President Barack Obama served two terms in the White House and ended up being moreà popular than his predecessor, George W. Bush, at the time he left office, according to public opinion polls. But Obamas popularity didnt mean heà could have run for a third term, as some conspiracy theorists suggested. U.S. presidents have been limited to serving only two four-year terms in the White House since 1951 when the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution was ratified.à Obamas terms as president began on Jan. 20, 2009. He served his last dayà in officeà Jan. 20, 2017. He served eight years in the White House and was succeeded by Republican President Donald Trump. Obama, like most ex-presidents, hit the speaking circuit after leaving office. Third-Term Conspiracy Theory Conservative critics of Obama began raising the prospect of a third term early in his tenure in the White House. Their motivation was to raise money for conservative candidates by way of scare tactics. In fact, subscribers to one of former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrichs email newsletters were warned of a specific scenario that must have seemed rather frightening: President Barack Obama running for, and winning, a third term as president in 2016. Conspiracy theorists believed the 22nd Amendment limiting presidents to two terms in office somehow would be wiped from the books by the time the 2016 campaign rolled around after Obama had won re-election to a second term in 2012. That, of course, never happened. Trump pulled off an upset against Democrat Hillary Clinton. Rumors About a Third Term The email from Gingrich Marketplace, which is managed by the conservative group Human Events, claimed Obama would win a second term and then go on to win a third term that would begin in 2017 and last through 2020 despite the constitutional ban. An advertiser to subscribers of the list wrote: The truth is, the next election has already been decided. Obama is going to win. Its nearly impossible to beat an incumbent president. Whats actually at stake right now is whether or not he will have a third-term. The advertisers message was not written by Gingrich himself, who went on to run for the GOP nomination in 2012. The email neglected to mention the 22nd Amendment, which reads in part: No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice ... Notion of a Third Term in Wartime Still, even some pundits writing in the mainstream media raised the question of whether Obama could serve a third term, depending on world events at the time a second term would expire. Faheem Younus, a clinical associate professor at the University of Maryland and founder of the website Muslimerican.com, wrote in The Washington Post that attacking Iran could give Americans reason to keep Obama as president for a third term. Younus made his case: Wartime presidents can sell a Double Whopper to a vegetarian. As the festinate decision of bombing Iran turns into a global conflict, dont expect our constitutional law professor turned president to decline his partys suggestion: if it can be ratified; it can be repealed. Repealing the 22nd Amendmentââ¬âwhich some argue was never vetted publiclyââ¬âis not unthinkable. The notion of a third term was not unthinkable at one time. Before the ratification of the 22nd Amendment,à Franklin Delano Rooseveltà was elected to four terms in the White Houseââ¬âin 1932, 1936, 1940, and 1944. He is the only president to have served more than two terms. Other Conspiracy Theories Obama critics spread numerous conspiracy theories during his two terms in office: At one point, nearly one in five Americans wrongly believed Obama is a Muslim.Numerous widely circulated emails erroneously claimed Obamaà refused to recognize the National Day of Prayer.Others believed his signature accomplishment, an overhaul of health care in the United States, paid for abortions. The most nefarious of the conspiracy theories, one propagated by Trump himself, was that Obama was born in Kenya and not Hawaii, and that because he was not born in the United States he was not eligible to serve as president.
